Introducing the universal word, use it to call the stranger on the street, use it to ask anyone for help, use it instead of some verb that you don't know how to say it. It is in the formal form and can be used in many events.

There are japanese phrases to say when you are leaving and coming back home. Because some of the general greeting word like こんにちは(konnichiwa) Good afternoon, こんばんは(kombanwa) Good evening, さようなら(sayounara) Goodbye are hardly used among family members.

Japanese seems to use apologies all the time, and that culture makes the foreigner uncomfortable with. It's too formal and not sincere. But for japanese, they use it to express the gratitude, their sincereness, and apology for being rude.

失礼(shitsurei) by its meaning is rudeness.
